Problems with this Article

[edit]

Although John Angus Campbell is a respected, award winning, wide-cited scholar of rhetoric and civic engagement, this article seems be written entirely about Campbell's role in the intelligent design debate and seems to be based largely off of short article in the Seattle Weekly which, although its certainly a real publication, does not strike me as an overwhelmingly reliable source. Many of the links and citations (including the SW article) are no longer available and are hard to verify.

I am leaving a note because I found this very detailed set of four pages by Campell that discuss this biography in depth: [1] [2] [3] [4]

For example, this biography claims that Campbell is a member of the International Society for Complexity, Information and Design although the society's website does not currently list him as a member and Campbell says on his website that he has never heard of it. Campbell's page seems very reasonable and I think our readers would be well served if somebody went over his pages closely, looked at the current references, dug up some more, and tried to improve this article by removing errors and mistatements and by making the article reflect his body of work in general.

I am currently a faculty member in one of Campbell's old department which is how I ran across the article and his refutation. I've never met Campbell so I don't think WP:COI is a problem in this case but I would still appreciate it if others would get involved and try to make an attempt to fix this. —mako 20:16, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wirhout checking all the sources, Darwinism, Design, and Public Education. John Angus Campbell and Stephen C. Meyer, eds. works for me: Forrest certainly shows a lot of information about his pro-ID views at that time. While we have to be cautious if his self-published info is unduly self-serving, it should be possible to review these sources and show Campbell's more recent position in context. . dave souza, talk 22:08, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My strong sense from looking through the sources here is that Campbell has a nuanced position on ID and it's been consistent throughtout. Campbell, according to his own account, is a Darwinist but also strong believer in the usefulness of using debate and argument to understand complex issues like Darwinism and evolution. In other words, he argues for "teach the controversy" because he is as a strong believer in the value of teaching concepts by teaching arguments about them, not because he is a proponent of ID's validity. Certainly, many ID proponents have cited Cambpell in support of ID and its validity and usefulness and several anti-ID sources have attacked him claiming he was doing the same. Both accounts seem to miss the nuance of his position. In the case of the ID proponents, I think they do so intentionally to capitalize on the academic legitimacy his "support" gives their position. I think the article can be changed to reflect this. —mako 02:55, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
